Energetic Medicine Mentorship: Pattern Language & Plant Intelligence
Pattern Language & Plant Intelligence
July 8 – Nov 6, 2023
“Seeking for truth I considered within myself that if there were no teachers of medicine in this world, how would I set to learn the art? No otherwise than in the great book of nature, written with the finger of God. I am accused and denounced for not having entered in at the right door of the art. But which is the right one? Galen, Avicenna, Mesue, Rhais, or honest nature? Through this last door I entered, and the light of nature, and no apothecary’s lamp directed me on my way” ~Paracelsus .
One who works with energetic medicine lives at the edge between the world of people and the world of plants. We can be stewards and guardians of plants of this bioregion and the Earth herself. Plant medicine people connect people with plants so that they may partner with them on a healing journey. It is our sacred joy and honour to do the work we do. The path of the energetic practitioner is, ultimately, a regenerative sacred journey.
This Mentorship is an invitation to enter the rich and diverse vocabulary of the plant world. Learn the complex language of interconnected relationships, constituents and properties and subtle healing properties. Enter into this world and become a community practitioner – an activist for the food and medicines of this bioregion. Through experiential nature-centred learning sessions – ignite your innate ability to make contact with the plant world, learn from and be nourished by the life-giving power of deeply-rooted bioregional plants. Reclaim your birthright to gather, prepare and make plant medicines that genuinely support your physical, mental, emotional and spiritual vitality.
Pattern Language & Plant Intelligence
Throughout recorded history, nearly every culture on Earth has used plants to thrive and heal. Recognizing and respecting the power of nature is a critical and essential aspect of today’s face-paced world. Integrating the ancient herbal tradition, wild plant intelligence, Indigenous wisdom and ecological pattern language, this Mentorship is taking this field of study to a whole new level. The interest in plant energetics is expanding, and many people becoming more interested in maintaining healthy, vital lives will continue and increase their use of plant bioenergetics in the coming years.
Pattern language describes an effective design practice or patterns of helpful organization within a field of expertise. It is a functional language for designing and planning based on natural considerations. Patterns describe a problem and then offer a solution.
“The system begins to display something other than synchronicity, acting as a unit, to have behaviours. And just as a study of the parts of a self-organized whole cannot give an idea of the larger whole’s nature, the study of the smaller parts’ behaviours cannot give an idea of the larger system’s behaviour. As Camazine et al. note, “an emergent property cannot be understood simply by examining in isolation the properties of the system’s components. . . . Emergence refers to a process by which a system of interacting subunits acquires qualitatively new properties that cannot be understood as a simple addition of their contributions.”6 Or as systems researcher Yaneer Bar-Yam puts it, “A complex system is formed out of many components whose behaviour is emergent, that is, the behaviour of the system cannot be simply inferred from the behaviour of its components. . . . Emergent properties cannot be studied by physically taking a system apart and looking at the parts (reductionism).”
~Stephen Harrod Buhner
This mentorship program allows participants to experience a depth of understanding of the whole plant. It is a practical hands-on learning experience at the subtle level of the energetic gifts the plants have to offer the world.
The Leadership Pathway
“We’ve become strangers to nature. The best way to live longer, healthier lives is to rewild ourselves by returning to nature whenever we can.” ~Daniel Vitalis
We are looking for enthusiastic agents of change who are ready to co-design new approaches to the way we live that are socially just and ecologically regenerative. We are looking for those prepared to take risks and stand on the cutting edge of new practices in this area. I intend to work with inspired and self-motivated individuals who want to move their herbal and ecological education beyond bookwork into the experience. To support an individual who wants to build a long-term and deep relationship with wild and native plants.
For 45-years, Shantree has been weaving and sharing his passion for wild nutrition, herbalism and the energetics of the elemental forces of nature. He synthesizes experience and ancient wisdom to support you on this hands-on, pragmatic plant journey. An integrative system of philosophies, personal transformation strategies and primordial indigenous understanding to develop and deepen the powers of plant medicine.
With the wild and native plants as our guides, you will see through eyes connection and oneness. Living rooted in the cycles and laws of the natural world yields a strategy for crafting positive cultures of inter-relationship.
May the blood of the forest run through your veins like the river. It is a gift only a few share in the age of technology and pavement.”
This mentorship program is an excellent adjunct to any self-directed studies. It complements those trained in or interested in the flow of energies and the elements of nutrition related to wholistic nutrition, herbalism, forest gardening or permaculture experience. Throughout the mentorship program, we work together to accelerate growth in your studies. This Mentorship offers simple yet effective processes, systems and structures that you can utilize in resolving personal and ecological challenges.
This action-learning program is process-oriented, learner-directed and focused on designing and implementing real-life projects. It engages students in the fundamentals of ecological design through real-life situations. The ‘action learning’ methodology allows students to learn professional design skills to balance inner and outer regeneration. Each participant will research and document their project of choice while maintaining regular one-on-one sessions.
The objective is that all participants take action in their communities. Envision being the catalyst that brings positive change to your family and community – a life-enhancing practice that not only heals and nourishes but awakens in others the joy and empowerment that comes as we remember our deeply rooted connection with the plants of our bioregion.
The Process
Why a Herbal Mentorship Approach
The Mentorship process weaves deep plant connection, bioenergetic nutrition, wild plant intelligence, nature immersion, systems thinking and ecological principles with an in-depth study of nutritional and medicinal plants and case studies.
This weaving reminds each of us that “You are part of everything! You are part of the fire, you are part of the green, you are part of the stars, and you are related to everything. You are related to the stones, to trees, to the fish, to the creepy, to the ones that fly, to the ones that walk on all fours, and to the ones that walk on two legs. Everything is sacred, and therefore, you are sacred too.”
~Black Elk
This program is designed as a modular spiral, which deepens with each training session. We meet for approximately one 3-day weekend each season. Participants will be introduced to new content, processes, and plant experiences during each session.
Days are spent in various small and significant groups, learning together in the natural world. The learning and support continue through the seasons through small group tutoring sessions, buddy check-ins, and one-on-one educational materials with Shantree. The progression of moving between the 3-day weekends and having time to integrate and apply the content you have learned makes the curriculum come alive and enhances a new way of being, living and engaging the world.
We request that participants attend ALL 3-day weekend training, as unison is fundamental to building harmony and trust for our collective experience and deepening journey. Outside of the weekend training, you can expect to spend approximately 10 to 20 hours between peer coaching training and engaging in program projects on your own time. The research programs are designed to incorporate and empower your life and work. Please consider your capacity to participate fully before applying to the program.
“True education does not consist merely in the acquiring of a few facts of science, history, literature, or art, but in the development of character. We need radical thinking, creative ideas and imagination, A radical way of thinking reveals the secret of making change happen.”
** Upon completing this mentorship and the Shamanic Herbalism correspondence course, you will receive an Energetic Medicine Mentorship Certificate.

Plant Intelligence:
Wild Wisdom of Weeds
July 8 – 10, 2023
Since the age of technology, humans have lost a sense of nature being alive. For many today there is an urning to reconnect. There is a powerful, ancient intelligence in the wild world of plants called the doctrine of signatures. Throughout history and in all cultures worldwide, people understood plants with this living system by ‘reading the ‘Book of Nature,’ which is integral for advancing ecological healers and herbalists.
Shantree will be drawing from ancient and modern sources and will blend this knowledge with his rich experience and personal wisdom to create a marvellous experience designed to take you deep into the energetics of plants.
This training session will cover various aspects of plant energetics and the doctrine of signatures in an easily accessible system to learn to read the language of plants in connection with regeneration.
Some of the possible topics included in this are:
- Plant Energetics
- Encoded Plant Wisdom
- Plants as Guides & Teachers
- The Hand of the Elements
- Exercises to directly perceive & interact with the complex, living, self-organizing plant beings

“Nature’s life-giving plants are Nature’s gift to us to support us in taking the next evolutionary step to this planet into our destiny as peaceful, free, and joyous spiritual human beings.”
“Plants are a dynamic force that interacts with humans on the physical, mind, and emotional levels and energetic and spiritual levels. The study of plant energetics is the study of the interaction with the assimilation of the dynamic forces of our total being.” ~Dr. Gabriel Cousens

Elemental Medicine: The Secret Language of Plants:
The Intelligence of the Heart in Direct Perception of Nature
Oct 14 – 16, 2023
This training will explore how to communicate with the plant kingdom to aid your nutritional and healing needs. An exploratory process of meaning into the states of mind, being, and communicatory relationships will support us in the future. The next step in our work with the plants and the world’s living wildness is as ancient and indigenous humans have always done. A journey, not of intellect, but self and spirit. And that journey takes all of us deep into the wildness of the world, into places where the greens are more luminous, where shadow takes on a unique life of its own, where light possesses an almost liquid quality, and where Artemis, the forest dweller, still lives, and sometimes speaks, to the humans who encounter her. It is where humans begin the crucial and long-overdue task of reclaiming the invisible.
People who ingest the wild, whether plants or landscapes, do something civilized people never do; they take inside themselves the world’s wildness; they eat the Wild Redeemer. At that moment, something unique happens; some invisible thing enters inside them. And when that happens, everything changes. They become aware that there is intelligence in this world far older than humans and that the humans and the older intelligence of the world are intended to make contact.
Plants and the Wildness of the World bring healing to our bodies and our souls as well; it is possible to re-inhabit our interbeing with the world, to live embedded within the living communications that surround us, to re-bond with the world from which our species emerged, to live every day surrounded by the touch of kin upon us.
We will explore the sacred dimension of plant and human interactions.
Some of the possible topics included in this are:
- Plant Energetics
- Encoded Plant Wisdom
- Plants as Guides & Teachers
- The Hand of the Elements
- Nature Attunement
- Creating & Using Tree Essences
- The Visionary Source of Indigenous and Ancient Plant Knowledge
- The Heart as an Organ of Perception
- Plant/Human Communication
- The 5-Steps of Direct Perception
- The Essentials and Necessity of Following Golden Threads
- The Three Elements of the Ecstatic Green Path

“All the beauty that’s been lost before. Wants to find us again.”
A Mentorship Approach
Much like a traditional apprenticeship, mentorship is one of society’s oldest forms of experiential education. In many cultures, training occurs almost exclusively in a setting where experienced herbalists work closely with others to share their accumulated wisdom. The structure of these relationships varies widely, but all have in common the desire to share information while offering support, guidance and critical feedback.
Our mentorship process supports individuals to become confident, skilled educators. Often those who have completed extensive training actively seek the support and guidance of an experienced in energetic medicine to act as a mentor.
Community is an essential aspect of medicine and is about relationships, after all – the relationships we have with each other and health and the relationships we have with plants. One of the unique relationships within energetic medicine is the relationship between mentor and student. Most eventually find some mentor – it’s a natural expression of how our knowledge and wisdom are passed along and is the traditional way that this was passed from one generation to another. Many herbalists have had mentors that helped shape them to become the herbalist they are today, and many continue to work with mentors even now!
The mentor-student relationship is valuable and unique because it helps us orient ourselves. Who do we want to become? In what direction are we moving? Mentors are individuals we wish to emulate, people who have been where we are now and have gone ahead where we want to travel. Having a mentor also helps us by providing insight and perspective when the going gets tough. When we struggle with new questions or a new case study, and we can’t seem to find answers, or when it seems like we’ve lost our way on our path, a mentor can be there with encouragement, a new idea, or wisdom from a similar experience that helps us find the missing pieces of our puzzles.
The definition of the word is “an experienced and trusted advisor.” That’s a rather broad definition! Each mentor-student relationship is unique since those two parts of the equation will always be two different individuals. It’s up to the parties involved to create the relationship in a way that makes sense for them.
In some cases, the mentorship unfolds very informally, like a friendship. However, mentorships can also be very formal, even to the extent of the mentor being paid in exchange for their time and the mentoring experience being guided by a written contract that details specific goals and desired outcomes the student and mentor have for the relationship.
Whether the prearrangement is formal or informal, a mentor is there to inspire and support the ongoing growth of the student and to provide assistance. They should be willing to help us troubleshoot, although it’s okay if they don’t just hand us the answers! Making us think and offering helpful suggestions when problems arise are the symbols of a truly great mentor. They understand our efforts and are there for us when we need encouragement. They can also help us be realistic and hold us to a standard, helping set the foundation for skills and a knowledge base that will serve us well in the future.
Most importantly, though, mentors can be role models. We should be careful not to put them on a pedestal – after all, our mentors are human, too – but at the same time, they should be people we think are worthy of imitating in some way. Today’s mentors are setting examples for us as teachers, consultants, and professionals.
It is important to remember that having a mentor is not a replacement for learning about the energetics of plant medicines on your own time – it should complement your studies. The point of being mentored is to assist you in growing on your path! Trustworthiness is essential; the relationship should always be directed by professionalism. The mentor-student relationship should always be mutually respectful.
“It is the supreme art of the educator to awaken joy in creative expression and knowledge.” ~Albert Einstein

“As I reflect on the educational aspects of our program, I would like to take the opportunity to thank you for contributing to our internship program’s educational programming this year. As always, visiting you folks is a highlight for the interns. They always come back from this trip with a greater understanding of herbal plants and forest gardening and respect for the diversity of food growing styles. They had this to say “A wonderful, pioneering place! They helped educate about organics and now they’re taking the next step towards forest gardening.” ~Jaye Crawford, Ignatius Farm Interns, 2012
“I would like to take the opportunity to thank you for contributing to our internship program this year. For the interns, our day at the Living Centre was a definite highlight of the internship. We left feeling inspired and full of new ideas. It was fabulous to see such a successful example of what Permaculture, herbalism and forest gardening can be and how we can go about implementing their principles in our own lives.
Field trips, workshops and farm tours greatly enhance the internship experience by exposing interns to a diversity of farming and food systems and planting ideas for directions they will choose as they move forward. Not all interns will pursue farming as a career path, but what is certain is that they all have a deepened appreciation for farming and will become advocates for sustainable food systems in their own ways.
We deeply appreciate that you have been open to sharing your time and knowledge with us this season. On behalf of the entire Ignatius Farm CSA team, thank you once again for your involvement in educating for a healthy food system for the future. With gratitude.”
~Kailea MacGillivray, Senior Education Intern and Volunteer Coordinator, Ignatius Farm CSA
