Cabuya & Montezuma Costa Rica Accommodations

We are located at Los Caracoles which is a unique artistic property situated directly on the beach between the lively bohemian town of Montezuma (7km), and the quaint village of Cabuya (2 km).

Cabuya is a lesser-known town south of Montezuma on the gulf side of the peninsula. The gateway to Cabo Blanco National Park, Cabuya is less expensive than Montezuma or Malpais, but within a quick drive of both. Cabuya has a lot to offer besides the national park. There are several surf spots, rivers with waterfalls, huge trees, and many talented artists who live and work here.

Unlike Montezuma, Cabuya has a lot of flatlands, with a larger Tico community. There are several spots to buy local fresh fruits and vegetables.

Turquoise waters hug the beaches here on the coast at Las Manchas, Las Rocas and Los Cedros. Cabuya village is approximately 7 km south of Montezuma. Cabo Blanco National Park is another 2 km past Cabuya. Cabuya lies near the very tip of the Nicoya Peninsula, yet faces east towards the rising sun. Living in or close to the little village is attractive for conveniences but also for its growing community.

Many foreigners have chosen Cabuya to live in for its quiet surroundings and natural beauty. Expect to see howler monkeys taking a siesta in the trees and find migrating herons fishing to the rivers. The beach of Cabuya has both sandy and rocky areas, and at low tide, one can walk out to Cabuya Island by means of a natural land bridge, where there’s some of the best snorkelling on the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica. Montezuma is about a 10-15 minute drive north.

There are a few local restaurants. There are several hotels along this stretch, one standing out in quality and located along the main road with beachfront access. Two other hotels are also located right on the beach. Another hotel offers stays in rustic treehouse-like bungalows. Here are a few links to find accommodations that are fairly close to our location.

Montezuma: A Bohemian Beach Town

Montezuma is a town in Puntarenas Province, Costa Rica which began as a remote and has gained popularity since 1980’s. It is located near the southern tip of the Nicoya Peninsula 41 km (25 mi) southwest of  Paquera and 8 km (5 mi) south of the town of Cobano. Most services are in Cóbano. The nearest airport is located in Tambor.

Montezuma is an endearing beach town that demands you abandon the car to stroll, swim and (if you can stroll a little further) surf. The warm and wild ocean and that remnant, ever-audible jungle have helped this rocky nook cultivate an inviting, boho vibe. Typical tourist offerings such as canopy tours do a brisk trade here, but you’ll also bump up against Montezuma’s internationally inflected, artsy-rootsy beach culture in yoga classes, volunteer corps, veggie-friendly dining rooms and neo-Rastas hawking handcrafted jewelry and uplifting herbs. No wonder locals lovingly call this town ‘Montefuma.’

The town features a mix of local residents as well as foreign backpackers and eco-tourists who come for the beaches, rivers, and scenic waterfalls that surround the village. The nearby Cabo Blanco Nature Reserve draws nature lovers to the area. Here are a few links to find accommodations that are a few kilometres from our location.
