Shantree Kacera, D.N., Ph.D.

Shantree is a Permaculture Educator, Ayurvedic Live-Food Nutritionist, Therapeutic & Shamanic Herbalist, Constitutional Ecological Consultant & Forest Garden Practitioner with over 40 years experience in the Organic Natural Healing Arts. He is an expert on the medicinal and nutritional properties of herbs and trees of Carolinian Canada. His primary focus these days are on research, demonstration and education.

He is the founder and co-director of The Living Centre (1983) and Living Arts Institute.

Shantree received his doctorate in Nutritional Medicine and Herbalism in the 70's. Since then he has been shantreeexploring the effect of local foods and herbs on one's physical, mental and emotional health. His passion and study has lead him to explore the benefits of a high energy Ayurvedic live-food approach to nutrition. He has had the honour to teach, counsel and empower thousands of individuals on their health and educational journey. Shantree has been exploring the nutritional and ecological benefits of wild edibles and a live-food approach for four decades.

A past Vice-President of the Ontario Herbalists' Association (OHA) and served on the OHA board for 10 years. A Professional Member of the Ontario Herbalist Association for over 30 years. Shantree is dedicated to providing an integrated preventative approach to well being, applying the healing wisdom of the East and West. He continues to forage, wildcraft, formulate and dispense his own herbal preparations "HerbSpirit Botanicals". 

Shantree has been in private practice for 35 years offering nutritional and herbal advice through his comprehensive Ayurvedic Constitutional Lifestyle Programs which are integrated and individualize for each individual. His empowerment programs are created to go beyond symptom relief, but to support the individual to move towards their highest potential and live in their true passion and joy.

Shantree's deep spiritual connection to the Earth which has drawn him into the teachings of shamanic and earth wisdom practices as well as Carolinian Canada native plant preservation and studies. He is a passionate edible forest gardener and designer, permaculture teacher and well known for his unique circular medicinal-wheel forest garden and in the process of creating a local and native plant medicine trail. The land has an amazing abundance of over a 1,000 species of edible and medicine plants and trees through the 50-acre botanical sanctuary.

Shantree is one of the first generations of herbalists to rejuvenate herbalism in the 70's during a time when it had been almost entirely pushed to the recesses in Canada. Since then Shantree has been studying and applying herbal organic practices and then began experimenting at The Living Centre in 1983. Creating his own unique approach to how herbalism and permaculture work in the temperate climate. After 40 years he is continuing sharing this with his students and mentees who come to study Herbalism, Wild Nutrition, Forest Gardening and Permaculture. He offers two unique Herbalism, Wild Nutrition, Forest Gardening Mentorship Programs.

In 2015 Shantree was awarded 'Honouring our Elders' by the Canadian Council of Herbalist Associations as one of the nation's herbal elders that has offered years of services to community healing and to defend and establish the right to access herbs in Canada.

A number of years ago Shantree co-founded Artemisia's Forest Garden Nursery. To share a growing variety of edible, medicinal and useful trees and shrubs, vines and plants suited for forest gardens of Carolinian Canada.

Shantree combines his passion for forest gardening with newly emerging scientific information from many fields - Ecological Medicine, Resilience Science, Deep Ecology, Regenerative Design, Living Nutrition, Deep Organic Medicine, Bioregionalism, Natural Health Science and the visionary solutions from the Bioneers. Visioning to reveal a regenerative path toward better stewardship of the natural world. A spiritual activist at heart.

Shantree is the author of 'Ayurvedic Tongue Diagnosis', the first book of its kind to be published in the west.
