"What permaculturists are doing is (some of) the most important activity that any group is doing on the planet. We don't know what the details of a truly sustainable future are going to be like, but we need options. We need people experimenting in all kinds of ways and permaculturists are one of the critical groups that are doing that". ~Dr. David Susuki, Geneticist, Renowned Environmentalist and Broadcaster

Mission
Our mission is to offer an innovative program that empowers participants to think and act beyond the existing worldview. To cultivate pioneers and visionary leaders who want to bring their unique gifts to the world through the fields of Permaculture design.
Location
The Living Centre provides a rich learning environment in a beautiful rural setting in southwestern Ontario, Canada. Founded in 1983, The Living Centre is a 50 acre educational Centre with wild meadows, forest-woodland, swimming pond, organic fruit orchards and a variety of forest gardens that incorporate native plants of Carolinian Canada. The land has always been organic. The spacious surroundings offer you a perfect setting for learning and growing.
The Centre is known for its unique circular medicine wheel herb garden, a variety of forest gardens and edible medicine trail through the beautiful Carolinian forest. The teaching lodge is surrounded by a 1000 sq. ft. Earthship passive solar greenhouse which provides organic produce for nine months of the year.
You will experience a lifestyle approach to education that supports respect for life, human dignity, freedom, ecological sustainability and peace.
The real teachers are the ones that have been around for millennia. They sprout from decay and levitational forces emergent in the forest. They run networks of intelligence underground in as many ways as possible and they trust in the cycles of life and death.

Earth Wisdom Permaculture Q & A
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Does Earth Wisdom give a permaculture certificate? What does certification mean? How could I use it?
A: Yes, the Earth Wisdom Permaculture courses issue a valid permaculture design certificate on completion. It's proof that you've taken a minimum of the standard 72-hour permaculture course from recognized teachers. This doesn't mean you're now an expert. It does mean that you have the foundation to begin a lifetime of study and work. Like any other certificate, it can be used in resume building, job and school applications, nonprofit grant writing, and so on. If you're requesting college credit, your school registrar may want to see it.
Q: What does it mean to have a Permaculture Design Certificate?
A Permaculture Design Certificate signifies that one has completed a 72-hour design course in the principles and practices of Permaculture. It means the holder of the certificate is the holder of a profound toolbox of solutions and visions. Many people think they understand permaculture as a gardening system or that it is only about agriculture. Someone who has attended a training course and has received a certificate understands the full scope of what permaculture design has to offer. It also means they have an understanding of the systemic and integrated quality that good "sustainable" or "regenerative" design reflects. It doesn't mean the person has all skills necessary to implement these solutions. They carry with them what is possible.
Q: How do I become a permaculture designer?
Participants who have completed a Permaculture Design Certification course (PDC) can promote themselves as a certified permaculturist and can use the word permaculture in their work. The curriculum is a minimum of 72-hours and should follow the Permaculture Designers Manual. The permaculture courses that we offer are usually closer to 100 hours so we can cover other pertinent topics and do hands-on activities.
We recommend that a permaculture graduate spend at least two years applying what they learn in the permaculture course before they work professionally, especially if they did not have much prior experience.
Some people have already been doing a lot of this work and feel confident that they can serve the permaculture community by doing quality work, and they can put out the sign as soon as they graduate.
Q: What are the criteria for teaching a permaculture certification course?
The criterion for teaching a Permaculture Design Certification course (PDC) is that you need to have a permaculture design certificate yourself. (as described above).
We urge and highly recommend that you apprentice with an experienced teacher to maintain a consistency of quality education. There are also a number of Permaculture Teacher Training courses being offered. These are not "required" in order to teach a PDC, but most teachers have done this and thus we have maintained that consistency. We want to support the cultivation of new teachers and also want to keep the consistent quality of the PDC.
Q: Why does an Earth Wisdom Permaculture course cost so much? Shouldn't it be free, so we can all help save the planet?
A: This is where idealism meets reality. There's no getting around the fact that producing something of this size and scope takes money. But true to our idealism, Earth Wisdom Permaculture offers many work-trade scholarships for each program.
Our costs include facility and accommodation; organic food; class materials; teacher's, organizer's, and chief's fees; equipment rental; transportation; insurance; advertising; administrative costs, and so on. Any income over expenses goes back into the scholarship fund and helps to run the centre.
Q: Are there age limits? Teenagers, elders?
A: The regular Earth Wisdom Permaculture courses are a program designed for adults. The youngest participant has been 18 year old motivated and focused young people. Such older teens are welcome. This is not the place for troubled, aimless kids, though. If under 21, a parent/guardian must give written permission and sign our liability waiver. Most Earth Wisdom Permaculture participants are in their 20's to 50's, and usually there's a wonderful small group of 60's and older. You need to be reasonably healthy, but many people have some physical limitations; remember you can always opt out of activities like digging and planting a tree. (Let the youngsters show off with the shovels.)
Q: What about the weather?
A: We've found that our trainings, courses and apprenticeships are surprisingly popular. The weather here in London is in the Carolinian Canada zone and is milder than most of the country, but it can still be cool and damp depending upon the year. We like to offer our programs in the beginning of our greening time of year. Outdoor and hands-on sections may be shifted in response to weather. If you bring sufficient warm clothing and rain gear, you should be quite comfortable.
Q: What about Food?
Meals: Our meals are made fresh with organic produce in season as much as possible. Much of the food is grown on property and numerous wild edible foods will be foraged for daily. We offer a diverse range of delicious and nutritious raw food cuisine dishes. We do not use any animal product, dairy food or eggs at our centre.
While we can accommodate some changes to support food allergies etc. if you have special dietary needs a fridge is available and we request that you provide for your specific food needs.
Part of the Permaculture experience is getting involved with the activities at all levels, this also means participating in the care of some kitchen chores and the upkeep of common areas.
Q: When will future Earth Wisdom Permaculture Courses be scheduled? Are there regular, annual dates?
A: Generally we offer the 2-week Permaculture Training once a year in the summer and a Four-Season Permaculture which begins in March and spans over 5 weekends through the four seasons. Some of our scheduling depends upon the needs and calendars of our teaching team. This means that the dates are not exactly the same. If you are signed up for our e-newsletter we will keep you informed of upcoming trainings.
Q: I'd like transportation info, please.
A: Details and directions are on our website. Some general guidelines:
Some participants coming from far away have arranged an extra travel day on either end, stayed overnight in the city, and next day came to the centre. People considering a train or bus have similar time lags.
Driving: If you have a car, we appreciate your offering a ride to others. If you don't have a car, we will help coordinate carpools for each residential course.
Q: Can I arrive at the Centre site a day early? Stay a day late?
A: The prime permaculture answer to almost any question is: It depends! Work-exchange participants often fulfill their work requirements in this way, and others are welcome to join. For other courses - it depends on the site, the timing, and other factors.
Q: How about communications? Can I call home, friends, and clients? Is there a place to check email?
A: Yes. The centre wireless Internet access is available if you have your own laptop, although it may be limited. You can always bring your own mobile phone, although it may not work from remote locales. Of course you can receive emergency calls and messages through the facility or The Living Centre's office.
Q: May I record the lectures and sessions?
A: For personal, private use, yes.
Q: Can I bring my cat? My dog? My kids? My partner? My friends?
A: Here are our guidelines on guests, whether of four- or two-footed variety.
Pets: Please leave all pets at home or with a good friend.
Kids: All Earth Wisdom Permaculture courses are for adults. There is no childcare at Earth Wisdom Permaculture courses. In the future, we hope to offer more family-friendly courses but that is dependent on funding—as well as enough people interested in these options.
Adults: We don't allow drop-ins or visitors into regular class time, unless you make arrangements beforehand with the teachers. Our course at times offers evening sessions that are open to the local community, and your guests are welcome to join in. Please inquire.
Q: Can I bring my own tent and camp outside? Is it cheaper?
A: It depends! Check the specifics for the course you're interested in.
Q: I can't make this session, but would like to be informed of future Permaculture courses.
A: Send us an email and ask to be put on the e-newsletter to be notified. (This list is never used for any other purpose, and your e-address is kept private.)
Q: How far is the nearest town?
You can get to London central in approximately 25 minutes. However there are shopping areas within 10 – 15 minutes from the Centre.
Q: How long are the days?
The days are very full and diverse to keep them interesting and keep you on your toes. We begin at 8:30am. Approximately half of the days will include an evening session, with one day off.
Q: Are there interesting things to see in the area?
London is a lovely city with many parks, a river running through it and two lakes that are easily accessible. Port Stanley (20 minutes away) is the closest beach for good swimming.
Q: Do you have recreational activities on the property?
The Living Centre has a 25 acres beautiful woodlot that you are welcomed to hike through. We also have an Olympic pool size swimming pond that is fed by two natural springs. A great hang-out place. We do have a couple of bikes that are available for use. And of course, there are the hammocks where you can rest comfortably under the cherry trees.
Q: What do you expect from me as a permaculture participant?
We expect you to attend all daytime classes. Some evening classes are optional. Engage fully according to your capacity during the learn-by-doing sessions; participate whole-heartedly; honor the uniqueness of the program; commit to be here and have a positive, loving attitude. That's IT!
